A few days after being eliminated from the singles draw by Lukas Rosol, João Sousa won one of the most important matches in portuguese history alongside the czech player, beating the Bryan Brothers in three sets to get into Apia Internationals doubles semi-finals.
Playing against the world number one team, Rosol and Sousa had to fight for three sets in order to win the match, 3-6 6-3 14-12 and become the first team of the season to defeat the american twin brothers, winning 72 of the points played on their serves and converting 2 out of 3 break points to close the match after 66 minutes.
Rosol, ranked 47th, and Sousa, 51, are playing their first doubles tournament together so they can spend more time on court before playing the main draw at the 102nd edition of the Australian Open.
In the semi-finals, scheduled for friday, the pair will face third seeds Rohan Bopanna and Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi.
