November 1, 2015, last tournament of the season. As of today, João Sousa has won not one but two ATP singles titles. The best player in portuguese history cameback from a set to defeat local favorite Roberto Bautista Agut in the last edition of the spanish Valencia Open, now relegated to the ATP 250 category.
Playing his fourth ATP final of the season, Sousa started the match losing the opening set to the former world no. 14 (now ranked 24th) and being broken to open the second, but ended up wrapping a comeback similar to the one observed in Kuala Lumpur final two years ago, in which he got through Julien Benneteau from a match-point down, to win by 3-6 6-3 6-4.
At the age of 26, and after losing six straight finals, the portuguese player coached by Frederico Marques manages to fulfill his main goal of the season in its final week by upsetting Agut to also earn the 33th place in ATP rankings — reaching a career high and setting a new record for portuguese tennis.
